Every object that surrounds us was designed. It is a designer who cares for comfortable chairs, safe cars and beautiful toys. It is his job to create how the product should work, look and what should it be made of. In his work a certain feature is necessary, thanks to which he can design great functional things, this is:
CREATIVITY.
Children, unlike adults, constantly face new situations, problems and events for which they do not have ready solutions. Thanks to this, they creatively acquire the reality that surrounds them. The need to be creative is a natural feature of every child. Due to this fact they take part in tasks that allow them to discover their creative thinking with great enthusiasm. A child up to the age of 8 demonstrates the need for creation, after this period there is a decline in creative abilities and if they are not developed, they are inhibited.
A little designer is not just a set of wooden blocks. A little designer is a work system which supports the child's natural creativity. It is a combination of a set of wooden blocks with a piece of paper, combining elements and a design task. Connecting elements is not imposed, because the child should decide whether he wants to combine the elements temporarily based only on the law of gravity or use rubber bands or strings, for a longer lasting effect.
Design tasks are designed to fully exploit the potential of children's creativity. This happens when the child faces a problem that stimulates the creative activity.
UP TO THE SKY.
LET’S MOVE IT .
GO ROUND AND ROUND.
These are three examples of tasks that the child must interpret and develop. To optimally use the creative potential of the child, we perform the exercise in three variants. We start each of them similarly: from the interpretation of the problem. If there are difficulties at this stage, we help gently by asking questions eg:
UP TO THE SKY / how we can get there/ can we touch the sky
/ what can touch the sky
The child has at his / her disposal a full set of blocks, A4 paper sheet, linking elements: rubber bands, string etc.
Gradually we raise the level of difficulty. The child has a limited number of blocks, A4 paper sheet, linking elements: rubber bands, string .
The child has a limited number of blocks, A4 paper sheet, we limit the obvious connecting elements. We entourage the child to look for alternative ways of combining elements, eg. with paper.
Remember that every idea is important and valuable. There are no incorrect solutions. There are only more or less interesting. To have a few good ideas, you have to have many other ones.
Listen, do not criticize, be open to questions.
Stimulate constantly.
Ask questions:
- How is it called ? What did you want to show? What is it for?
Encourage to take a risk.
Be a "helping hand", but only if the child asks for it.
